The Oscars didn’t just appear out of thin air. When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded in 1927, the awards committee was only one of several groups that had been formed by the new organization. The idea of presenting awards was considered but not immediately pursued.
It took another ten months for the machinery to actually start grinding. In May 1928, the academy finally approved the committee’s suggestions to present Academy Awards of Merit in 12 categories.
The awards weren’t the initial focus when the Academy was founded in 1927.
This delay matters. It shows that the industry needed time to organize before it could decide who deserved what. The first ceremony wasn’t a massive, glitzy event like today’s version. It was a private dinner.
But the foundation was laid then. Those 12 categories set the template for what would become the most prestigious prize in Hollywood.
