What is TV Everywhere and how does it work?
This is the industry’s answer to cord-cutters. More people are cancelling cable for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Networks want to keep those subscribers. They offer you a way to watch live or on-demand content on any device, as long as you have an internet connection and a valid subscription.
You log into your cable account or use a dedicated app to verify your identity. Once authenticated, you can watch on:
- Smartphones
- Tablets
- Laptops
- Smart TVs
- Video game consoles
You can be in your backyard, a hotel room, or an airport waiting area. It works wherever you have a wireless signal.
Can you use TV Everywhere anywhere?
Not exactly. There are limits.
Most providers let you register unlimited devices, but they restrict how many can stream simultaneously. Also, this is not a standalone service. You must already have a cable subscription. It’s an add-on, not a replacement.
And no, you can’t watch everything. Networks decide which shows are available for streaming. This often depends on rights ownership. A network might own the rights to broadcast a movie on your TV, but not on your phone. So, some episodes or movies will be missing from the app.
Is TV Everywhere actually popular?
Surprisingly, yes. A December 2013 survey of 4,205 pay television subscribers found that 21% used a TV Everywhere service at least once a month. Of those users, 90% said they were satisfied with the experience.
It’s a small step, but it’s changing how we watch. We no longer need to be glued to the sofa. The screen follows you.
Will cable survive this shift? Maybe. TV Everywhere keeps you tethered to the provider while giving you the freedom to move around. It’s a compromise. But for now, it’s the only way to have your lunch and watch your show at the same time.
