India’s first astronaut: Meet the Indian Air Force pilot selected for Gaganyaan

2

Ajit Krishnan is making history. He was selected as one of the four astronauts for India’s first manned Gaganyaan space mission. Launch is currently planned for 2027.

Krishnan was more than just an astronaut candidate. He is a group captain and Test Pilot in the Indian Air Force (IAF). His background in high-stakes aviation makes him the best candidate for space travel.

The other three crew members share the same military roots. They are all from the Indian Air Force. This uniformity is remarkable.

The team also includes Shubhanshu Shukla. Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair is also a member. Angad Pratap has joined this group.

All four train together. They represent India in low earth orbit. The mission aims to prove that India can send humans into space and return safely.

Krishnan’s selection underscores the role of the Indian Air Force in this new chapter. It also raises questions about the future of human spaceflight in the region. Who will they meet there? What happens when they return?
